20 Thrifting Disasters

After years of thrifting and some more of reading about the basics of thrifting, then some more admiring others’ amazing thrifted finds, I felt there’s a sore lack of a defining description of all that’s possible to go amiss when it comes to second hand shopping… Here’s a try at collecting some thrifting disasters!

thriftings

1. When you set out with hours to kill to hunt the best finds, the second hand shops seem to be half empty of merchandise and you never find anything worthwhile.

2. However, if you just pop in with 10 minutes to kill before your train leaves, suddenly there are about 20 different items you don’t have time to try on.

3. And they change the full stock the day after, so you’ll never see them again.

4. Similarly, if you take a friend with you who always comments on what great stuff you find in thrift stores, when the two of you go together there are only lame denim skirts with pink trim and burgundy polyester blazers from the 90s.

5. Whatever amazing displays they put in the shop window are never for sale or have already been sold.

6. For some mysterious reason, this out-of-bounds window display always includes a clothing item you have been hunting for for months, like the perfect pencil skirt or a mint coloured blazer, or the cutest dress with a Peter Pan collar.

7. Anyway, you go in and hunt around. However, you always have to realise that when the size and the cut is perfect, the material or the colour are bound to be hideous.

8. Similarly, when the material and the colour are perfect, the size and the cut are hideous.

9. When something is a gorgeous, saturated hue, the colour is bound to be bleeding. You may convince yourself in the shop that the original owner must have lost weight, that’s why they donated the item, but deep down you know you will have to handwash that damn gorgeous blouse from now on until you donate it yourself.

10. “That lovely blouse is torn by the seam? I’ll sew it up in no time! Let’s get it.” (This happened 2 years ago and you still haven’t sewn it up.)

11. “That gorgeous skirt? It’s a bit too long but oh, I will alter it, no big deal!” (It’s been 3 years and now you actually use it as a shoe rag.)

12. “That huge shirt? The material is so pretty, I’ll totally make cushions-dolls-bookbinds-whatever from it.” (You have a whole drawer full of these and you don’t even own a sewing machine.)

13. If you spot a great colour and promising texture from afar, by the time you get there, another thrifter has it in her grubby hands and it’s an original Chanel blazer.

14. In your size.

15. If you spot a well-known label and get there first, it surely has greasy stains, or moth-holes, or comes in such a small/huge size it’s impossible to alter.

16. There are plenty of beautiful purses to be found in second hand shops, but the most beautiful ones have an indelible smell hanging around them that you cannot get rid of, however hard you try. One option left – carry the purse around but never open it. Which is sort of like carrying a cushion around the city. Pretty, but pretty useless.

17. When you find something that’s missing a button, it’s bound to be a coat with buttons coated in the material of the original item. So it’s impossible to find a matching one and you have to change all of the buttons.

18. Your coat is of course double breasted and has 20 buttons on front and an extra 10 on the cuffs.

19. Finally you have chosen some pretty amazing stuff that seem to be fitting you well. You go up to pay when you realize that you don’t have enough cash, they don’t accept credit cards and the next ATM is a 10 minute walk away. The shop closes in 5 minutes.

20. Of course this shop has a policy never to set aside items for anyone. The perfect garment you had to leave there will haunt your dreams for years to come.

Now is the time to admit it, you’ve experienced at least one of the above!
Do you have any more to add to the list? I’m keen to hear about your thrifting disaters. :)

Instant Pattern Mixing

PICT0016cas

Happy Easter weekend everyone! I hope the sun shines wherever you are!

PICT0005ca2s

I've been trying to incorporate more pattern mixing into my outfits, here's another mild try. I've had these tights for ages and this thrifted top seemed to be made for them!

PICT0010cas

In other news, please check out Carina's blogpost about our Budapest meeting! She edited our pictures much more professionally and wrote up her side of the story so sweetly! :)

PICT0012cas

Back to the clothes: undoubtedly the star of this outfit is this bracelet my Mum got me as a present for Christmas (and it gets to Easter until I show it off on the blog... :). It's from a design market, and the genious of  it is that you can exchange the buttons, which are patented on the surface.
 PICT0013cas

What a great idea! It gave me a chance to mix pinkinsh and bluish hues and stripes and dots... Voilá, instant pattern mixing!

Wearing: gifted bracelet from a design market, leather bracelet from Jojó Art Shop,
thrifted top, miniskirt from a random boutique, H&M belt and ring and tights,

Ice Flower

PICT0036cas

I remember a blogger mentioning how common it was to find an original Diane von Furstenberg wrap dress in thrift shops, and how you'll eventually meet the one that's your size. ( I forgot the source, sorry.) I thought, oh well, probably in the US... So I couldn't believe my eyes when I spotted this DVF dress in one of my favourite second hand shops!

PICT0033cas

One thing I always look out for when second hand shopping is materials I couldn't afford new, and silk is definitely one of them. A heavy silk jersey wrap dress, what else can you wish for for the winter? A pattern called Ice Flower, maybe. Which is what this lovely pattern is called, which I've found out after some online detective work. It makes me think of ghosts of jellyfish rather than flowers, but that's just my personal weirdness.

Oh, and it cost just the same as all the other, cotton or polyester, no-name dresses... After finding out how much these wrap dresses cost new, I'm really marvelling at my luck now!

PICT0042cas

This shot reminds me of the days I used to do Hungarian folk dancing, as this twirl looks just like a folk dance move!
I was just wondering how many time Hungarian folk dance and DVF was mentined in one page when I found this interesting blog entry of Diane's looking through the DVF website. Guess what, she visited Budapest in the summer! Really nice of her that she writes about her experiences and am I glad she liked my city!

Wearing: Second hand DVF dress, Calzedonia tights, Chinese booties,
Promod trench, C&A hat and scarf.

I've seen this before...

A new feature, yay! In this section you can click over to a previous outfit featuring certain components of the current one. (Gosh, that sounds businesslike!)
In other words, check out my remixes, girls. :)

Illustrated Shoot - Hearts of Gold

PICT0046cds

It's rather nice when Mother Nature provides us with golden accessories - like these fallen leaves.

PICT0050cds

December is on the doorstep with the festive season setting in. Obviously we don't celebrate Thanksgiving over here in Hungary, but to all the US bloggers - have a great time celebrating! If I could thank you for anything, it would be your continual support of my little blog.

PICT0052c2ds

Thank you, all of you with hearts of gold all over the world, for taking the time to read my words, leave comments, share your views! You make my life so much brighter! :)

Demure Pin-Up

PICT0002cas

This dress I bought second hand last year amuses me to no end. The frills on the shoulders make it look like some sort of an apron - it's so silly! I've been pondering getting rid of the frills, but decided that I love it this way, so they're staying!

PICT0005cas

How to get a dress wrinkled in no time?
Have your affectionate cat sit on your lap for 15 minutes, works every time! :)

PICT0008cas

It seems like I'm not only demure but tired as well, I sit down and prompty fall asleep.

Wearing: Dress: second hand, Shoes: some boutique, Belt: from a Promod skirt,
Necklace: Jeans Club, Flowers: H&M.

The next blogpost will be my 50th, so prepare for a cool giveaway! I'm definitely excited!

P.S.: Thank you LV of Food, Fashion and Flow, for giving me a Best Blog award! :)

Heatwave

Some pictures from the rainforest... Or from a Budapest garden.

PICT0355ca23s

It's 40 degrees Celsius in our neck of the woods, if you're interested. Which is a 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit. Woooh... A good enough reason for not being very talkative - let the atmosphere speak for itself!

I'm still smiling though! Soon it's holiday time! :)

Turquoise Thanks

Oh, girls, it’s one of those days. I'm sure it happened to you before that you weren't happy about your pictures. I still edited some anyway after work then got up and went out to buy an inordinate amount of fruit. I ate a whole melon, then I sat down again, and... I was still unhappy with the pictures. Even after devouring a melon! What an outrageous day!

So I looked at some of your blogs, then dicarded the edited pictures and chose some totally different ones.

It’s inevitable, sometimes I’m just unsure of my choices. But then I look around at your blogs and gather courage to share. What’s more, now I can’t wait to share my pictures with you. Especially the scarf tied as a turban thing, as I loved wearing it today!

Since I started taking my own pictures and share them with you all, my attitude towards my style changed immesurably. I walk around the city with head held much higher. I feel like an ambassador of a worldwide community of people who support each other not only in their choices of clothes, but in many small ways we don’t even realise. Thank you for your encouragement, your flow of lovely comments and continual support – even when my pictures weren’t very brilliant. Exactly three months ago today I started my blog and with it, started a conversation with all of you. It feels like I got to know you a little, I hope you feel the same way too!

The stuff I wore: Blouse and Skirt: Second Hand, Sandals: Tamaris,
Scarf and Belt: H&M, Earrings: Self made

The best comes at the end - I just checked and my Bazaar Times and Handmade Products blogpost that I submitted to IFB is included in this week's Links a la Mode! I'm over the moon! Time for another melon? :)

Wearing History

When I touch an object that has a history, my imagination can’t help but run away along the times it must have lived through.

I can’t restrain myself from buying old postcards and imagine someone writing them 100 years ago, the addressee treasuring the card for years and years, displaying, maybe even framing it.

Chipped porcelaine, however ugly, will always make me think of huge family lunches, kids running around the table, accidentally tripping and breaking the still missing piece off.

Books whose pages were turned by countless people before me, who read the same lines I’m reading and maybe thought similar thoughts.

Objects like these have value that has nothing to with their actual worth as it also depends on your ability to see it.

Like this belt which used to belong to my grandfather when he was a boy scout before the Second World War. It even has the date stamped on it, and the Budapest address of the scouting shop.

I already see my grandpa as a little boy, walking the streets of a very different Budapest, stepping into the shop while the bell rings to notify the salesman. I can also see him somewhat later, wearing this same belt, proudly frying pancakes in the middle of a forest, on a fireplace constructed in a ditch. (He told me about this when I was very small, and it apparently got stuck in my memory – maybe because the story involved sweets.)

For me, objects that have a past mean much more than a brand new designer piece. Not that I own any designer stuff - I just know that buying one of them wouldn't make me feel the same joy when I find an old, battered but beautiful object, that's seen more of the world than me. It’s truly an amazing feeling to "wear history". I find this piece much more precious than any brand new accessory.

Belt: Used to belong to my late grandfather, dress: Second hand, Jeans: Takko,
Sandals: Bata, Earrings: C&A, Ring: Jojó Art Shop

Love Story

I'm so sad here, guys, look:

It's all because this random guy on the street left me.

Oh, the drama!
But it didn't last long.

I'm quite aware this t-shirt reads PINK. I also think it's there for the benefit of the colour-blind and possibly has nothing to do with the pop-star under the same name. However, I like to believe it just reads INK, and if I turn slightly to the side, that's exactly what you see. As a lover of illustration and any sort of ink that I can doodle or print with, I think I deserve an INK t-shirt. Until it arrives I will always turn a little when I wear this top.

Another love-lorn look for good measure.

Top: Zara, Cardigan: Terranova (ancient), Skirt: thrifted,
Shoes: Deichmann, Belt: H&M (yes, the same one again, I'm hooked, sorry...),
7 Roses: H&M, Necklace: Jojó Art Shop.
